Jerzy Szablowski is an Assistant Professor of Bioengineering and a core member of Neuroengineering Initiative at Rice University where he leads the Laboratory for Noninvasive Neuroengineering developing technologies for noninvasive control, monitoring, and treatment of the brain. He received his B.Sc. in Biological Engineering from MIT in 2009, and worked on engineering protein contrast agents for MRI in collaboration with Alan Jasanoff’s, Robert Langer, Frances Arnold’s research groups. He then received his Ph.D. in Bioengineering from Caltech in 2015 for his work on programmable therapeutics for modulating gene expression in animal models of cancer in the Dervan laboratory. Following this, he developed Acoustically Targeted Chemogenetics (ATAC) in the Shapiro laboratory at Caltech, where he developed new methods for neuromodulation of specific neural circuits. In his laboratory he engineers tools to accelerate the development of treatments for brain disorders using molecular technologies for noninvasive control and monitoring of the brain. He was a recipient of a number of awards, including being selected as a Packard Fellow, DARPA Young Faculty Awardee (YFA), NIH NIBIB Trailblazer, and NARSAD Young Investigator. In the field of synthetic biology he also received the Synthetic Standard Prize along with other awards from the International Genetic Engineering Machines (iGEM) competition.
